# How to rank contacts by keyword importance

> Keep a broad search relevant: mark keywords as must have, desirable, or excluded, weight the desirable ones, and set how many a profile must match.

To rank contacts by keyword importance, add your keywords in the Contacts career filters, mark each one **Must have**, **Desirable**, or
**Exclude**, and give the desirable ones a score multiplier.

## What this gets you

* The best-fitting contacts at the top of the list, not just a list of matches.
* Broad searches that stay relevant, because desirable keywords rank instead of filter.
* Control over which skills matter most for this role.

## Steps

1. Open [Contacts](https://docs.jobin.cloud/contacts.md) and the filter sidebar, then open a career filter such as role title, skills, or company.
2. Add a keyword and choose how it counts:
   * **Must have**: the keyword must be present in the profile.
   * **Desirable**: if present, the profile ranks higher.
   * **Exclude**: if present, the profile is excluded.
3. For a **Desirable** keyword, set the **Score Multiplier** from 0.1 to 5 to say how much it matters.
4. Choose **Set Keyword Threshold** to require a minimum number of desirable keywords in each result.
5. Apply the filters. Contacts are ordered from the best fit down.

## Tips

* Keep must-haves to the few things that are truly essential. Every extra one removes good candidates.
* Choose whether a keyword must match the current role or any past role.

## Ideas to get more from it

* Save the filters as a saved search, or as the job's [ideal candidate](https://docs.jobin.cloud/how-to/define-an-ideal-candidate-profile.md), so they apply automatically.
* Raise the threshold when a search returns too many people, instead of adding must-haves.
