# How to create a custom field for contacts

> Store the data that is specific to your process, like salary expectations or notice period, in a structured field you can filter on.

To create a custom field for contacts, open a contact's **Custom Fields** tab, search for an existing field or create a new one, and choose its type.

## What this gets you

* You capture information specific to your process, such as notice period or referral source, in a structured way.
* Custom fields can be filtered, so they turn into precise segments.
* You create a field once and reuse it on any contact.

## Steps

1. Open a contact's profile and go to the **Custom Fields** tab.
2. Search for an existing field and assign it, or choose to create a new one.
3. Choose the field type: text, number, date, list, or range.
4. For a list, add its options. For a number or range, set its limits, and turn on the minimum, maximum, and step if you want Jobin to enforce them.
5. Save. Changes save automatically with visible status.

## Tips

* Manage every field in one place under **More** > **Workspace** > **Custom fields**. You can search, delete, and jump to the contacts that use a field.

## Ideas to get more from it

* Link a job application question to a field, so applicants fill it in for you.
* Combine several custom fields in one Contacts search to build a precise segment.
* Use list fields to keep answers consistent across your team.
